Summary Introduction

To determine:

The way through which NASA scientists determine whether the amino acids recovered from space are evidence of Earth-like extraterrestrial life rather than the result of non-metabolic processes.

Introduction:

Monomer units of amino acid cause the formation of proteins that are organic compounds containing residues. Amino acids contain a central carbon atom, a hydrogen atom, an amino group (NH2) , a carboxyl group (-COOH), and an R-group. Protein in cell functions in many ways, such as they work as enzymes, regulate metabolic reactions in the body, transport cell solutes and regulatory functions in the body.

An earlier mission to Mars contained instruments that determined that amino acids were present on the surface of Mars. Why were scientists excited by this discovery?
The end products of protein metabolism is often ammonia, a base. What effect will this have on pH, will it go up or down? Another common end product, pyruvic acid. Into which metabolic pathway will the body use pyruvic asid as a substrate to produce ATP?
Disaccharides like lactose can barely get through dialysis tubing, but CAN NOT move across a cell membrane. Therefore, what must happen to disaccharides and polysaccharides that we eat in order for our cells to use them as energy molecules?
