Chapter 21.9, Problem 21.94QAP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Virus is a core of genetic material (DNA or RNA) surrounded by an outer coat of protein. The protein coat protects the genetic material and helps the virus enter the host cell. Host is cell or organism in which or on which a virus lives to obtain food and living space. Outside of living cell, viruses crystallize and act more like a nonliving object. They cannot metabolize food, grow or respond to stimuli like living things. Viruses can be inactive for many years, but when they enter a living cell, they are alive. Once inside the living cell (host cell), the viruses quickly reproduce. This rapid reproduction destroys the cells of an organism, causing infection and disease.

Concept used:

Viruses is in crystalized form and inactive for many years viruses does not have necessary material such as nucleotides and enzymes to make protein and grow.

To determine: the need of viruses to invade a host cell
