Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The mechanism of the reaction in which the modest increase in all four dNTPs, three or four-fold, stimulates mutagenesis out of proportion to the dNTP pool change, should be explained.
Concept introduction:
Mutagenesis is defined as the process through which DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that contains genetic information of an organisms get altered. The alteration in the genetic information results in mutation. Mutation can be result of any of the following:
- Spontaneous occurrence in nature.
- Exposure to mutagens
- Using laboratory procedures
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) precursor imbalances are mutagenic. If dGTP is accumulated, DNA precursor can compete with dATP for binding opposite dTMP in the DNA template. This results in transition mutation.
