Chapter 22.2, Problem 1R
Summary Introduction

To review:

As per the Dobzhansky-Muller model, the divergence in the alleles at different gene loci leads to genetic incompatibility between the species. It needs to study the incompatibility which is less likely at the same locus between two alleles.

Given:

It is given that Dobzhansky-Muller model suggests that the divergence in the alleles is seen at different loci of a gene which can lead to genetic incompatibility between the species that possess such genes.

Introduction:

Dobzhansky-Muller model is a two-locus version model which studies the changes between the two lineages are from the same ancestor population, which gets divided from each other and evolve on their own. The new allele that generates, it becomes fixed in each descendent but the locus of the two alleles becomes different.

One particularly useful feature of the Hardy-Weinberg equation is that it allows us to estimate the frequency of heterozygotes for recessive genetic diseases, assuming that Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium exists. As an example, let’s consider cystic fibrosis, which is a human genetic disease involving a gene that encodes a chloride transporter. Persons with this disorder have an irregularity in salt and water balance. One of the symptoms is thick mucus in the lungs that can contribute to repeated lung infections. In populations of Northern European descent, the frequency of affected individuals is approximately 1 in 2500. Because this is a recessive disorder, affected individuals are homozygotes. Assuming that the population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, what is the frequency of individuals who are heterozygous carriers?
Assume an ideal diploid population of size 2N=32 (Just like the Buri Drosophila drift experiment with 16 individuals, or 32 gene copies, every generation). a) What is the probability that a neutral allele present in exactly 16 copies will CHANGE BY FEWER than 2 copies in the next generation? Be sure you understand that this includes cases where the number of copies remains unchanged, as well as the cases (plural!) where the magnitude of change between generations is one. b) What is the ultimate probability of fixation for this allele by drift? c) In the same population, what is the probability that a neutral allele present in exactly 2 copies will change by fewer than 2 copies (same meaning as above) in the next generation? d) What is the ultimate probability of fixation for this allele by drift?
ln a population of turtles, there are yellow-green shells and green shells.  The yellow shells are caused by a homozygous recessive gene and the green shells are caused by the dominant gene.  Given the following data:AA = 340Aa = 270aa = 120                                           a)  Calculate p and q. b)  Use a chi square test to determine if these alleles are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.     Submit your answer as a pdf or doc file.  Show your work
