Summary Introduction

Concept introduction: Lichen is a symbiotic association existing between a fungus and a photosynthetic partner, usually a cyanobacterium. The properties exhibited by lichens always create confusion while differentiating it as a plant or fungus, but lichens are definitely not plants. They are found in all extreme environments extending from deep sea to high alpine elevations.
