Chapter 23.6, Problem 23.14P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The information regarding the formation of optically active product after the reaction of Dglucose with sodium borohydride and optically inactive product after the reaction of Dgalactose with sodium borohydride is given. An explanation corresponding to this loss of optical activity is to be stated.

Concept introduction:

The species that are asymmetric in nature have a tendency to rotate plane of polarized light and is thus optically active in nature. Optically active compounds rotate the plane of polarization in a clockwise direction and are non-super imposable mirror images of each other.

Students have asked these similar questions
When d-glucose is reduced with sodium borohydride, optically active glucitol results. When optically active d-galactose is reduced, however, the product is optically inactive.Explain this loss of optical activity
When D-glucose is reduced with sodium borohydride, optically active glucitol results but when optically D-galactose is reduced ,the product is inactive why?
Draw Fischer projections for the product(s) formed by reaction of d-galactose with the following. In addition, state whether each product is optically active or inactive.  Q.)Br2/H2O/CaCO3
