Chapter 24, Problem 1E
Summary Introduction

To determine: The base that is most likely to pair with hypoxanthine.

Concept introduction: Base pairing can be defined as the capability of nucleotides (nucleobases) to form pairs by stacking over one another and thereby helping to form well organized structures that helps to store genetic information in the form of RNA and DNA. These bases are called as primary bases or Watson-Crick base pairs such as (A=T & G C).

But there are some naturally modified purines and pyrimidine bases that exist in constituent of nucleic acids those base pairs without following the Watson-Crick base pairing rule are called as Wobble base pairs. One of such Wobble base pairs is hypoxanthine and cytosine.

Answer to Problem 1E

Correct answer: The base that is most likely to pair with hypoxanthine is cytosine.

Explanation of Solution

Explanation: Hypoxanthine is a naturally occurring modified form of purine base. Hypoxanthine is formed due to the mutational changes in the base adenine. Deamination of adenine bases leads to form hypoxanthine that pairs with the cytosine (instead of pairing with thymine base) because its structure resembles to guanine. Some usual structures such as tRNA molecule consists of hypoxanthine attached with ribose sugar in the form of inosine.

Conclusion

Conclusion: Hypoxanthine structure resembles to guanine base. Therefore, it is more likely to pair with cytosine that usually pair with guanine.
