Ornithine is a product of urea cycle that is converted to putrescine by the action of ornithine decarboxylase. This enzyme is essential for stabilization of the newly produced DNA through the synthesis of polyamine molecules. The absence of this enzyme causes DNA damage and apoptosis in cells.
