Chapter 24, Problem 24.71GP
In the synthesis of cholesterol, acetyl-CoA is converted to 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene. Molecules of 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene are then joined to give the carbon skeleton of cholesterol. Draw the condensed structure of 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene. How many carbon atoms does cholesterol contain? What minimum number of 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene molecules is required to make one molecule of cholesterol?

Olestra has been used in certain snack foods as an alternative to fats and oils. Its structure consists of a sucrose molecule in which all free hydroxyl groups have formed esters with oleic acid (an 18-carbon monounsaturated fatty acid). Olestra molecules have no caloric value because they are exceptionally large and cannot be digested. Draw the structure of olestra. Use R-COOH as an abbreviation for oleic acid.
The diversity of functional groups on sugars that can form glycosidic bonds
greatly increases the information content of glycans relative to oligopeptides.
Consider three amino acids, A, B, and C. How many tripeptides can be
formed from one molecule of each amino acid? Now consider three sugars-
glucose, glucuronic acid, and N-acetylglucosamine. Use shorthand
(eg., Glca(1 → 4)GICUAB(1 → 4)GICNAC) to represent 10 trisaccharides
with the sequence Glc-GlcUA-GluNAc. Is your list exhaustive?
Prostaglandins are a naturally occurring class of compounds in our bodies that affect blood pressure, and cause inflammation and other physiological responses. The synthesis of prostaglandins in our bodies starts with arachidonic acid (see figure below), a long, unsaturated hydrocarbon containing four C=C double bonds and an acid functional group (–COOH). The stereoisomer with all cis double bonds is shown.
Draw the stereoisomer with all trans double bonds. Draw the Lewis structures with the formal charges minimized. Do not include formal charges or electron pairs. You do not need to draw hydrogen atoms that are connected to carbon atoms.
