The position of first and second ship relative to position A is 52km and 40km towards west, respectively.

Given:

The average velocity of first ship is 35km/h , while that of second ship is 26km/h .

The time taken by first ship is 2.2 h , while that taken by second ship is 2.5 h .

The distance between points A and B,is 25 km.

Formula used:

The average velocity of a particle is given by

  v¯=ΔdΔt=dfinaldinitialtfinaltinitial

Calculation:

Using the above formula of average velocity, the distance travelled by the first ship in 2.2h with respect to the point Bis,

  v¯1=x1xBt1tB

  v¯1=35km/h

  t1tB=2.2h

  x1B=x1xB=35×2.2=77km towards West

Hence, the distance travelled by the first ship with respect to the initial position A will be,

  x1A=x1BxAB=(7725)km=52km with respect to A

Similarly, the distance travelled by the second ship in 2.5h with respect to the point Bis,

  v¯2=x2xBt2tB

  v¯2=26km/h

  t2tB=2.5h

  x2B=x2xB=26×2.5=65km towards West

Hence, the distance travelled by the second ship with respect to the initial position A will be,
