Concept introduction:
The initiation step is needed to create free radicals. After initiation, propagation occurs via radical addition. A radical, such as benzoyloxyl radical, produced directly from the initiator, adds to other molecule of monomer increasing the length of the carbon chain. The less substituted carbon is called the tail and the more substituted carbon is called the head. The head-to-tail addition of vinyl monomers is usually favored in free radical polymerization. Increasing steric hindrance during head-to-tail polymerization, decreases rate of polymerization.
