Chapter 27, Problem 3EQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

The following mentioned frequency and number of sheep for a population sheep, which is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium:

The frequency of the white and yellow fat alleles in this population.

The number of sheep with white fat and are heterozygous carriers of the yellow allele.

Introduction:

The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium describes that the genotypicand allelicfrequencies remains constant, in a populationacross generations, if the evolutionary forces are not present. In its standard form, the equation of Hardy-Weinberg indicates that each individual inherits two replicas of each gene, one from each parent. For a two-allele condition, the equation is written as (p+q)2=1 .

Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive disease. In a population of one hundred individuals, twenty-five are found to have the disease. Assuming Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, what is the percent of the population that are carriers for cystic fibrosis
a.)If the frequency of an allele at a locus of interest is 0.57, what is the frequency of the genotype that is homozygous for this allele (that is, that genotype has two copies of this allele)? b.) If we know that the frequency of an allele at a locus of interest is 0.57, we have enough information to calculate the frequency of the related phenotypes in the population, assuming there are only two alleles.
In a particular species of flower, C1 codes for red flowers, C2 codes for white, with the heterozygous individuals being pink. A. In the frequency of pink individuals in the population was .7126, would you be able to estimate the frequencies of the individuals alleles in the population? Why or why not? B. If the frequency of red individuals in the population was .329, what would the estimated frequency of pink and white individuals be in the same population?
