Concept explainers
The two main ways in which glaciers flow.
Answer to Problem 16RQ
The two ways in which glacier flow are internal flow and base sliding.
Explanation of Solution
The glacier is the great icy river that is frozen and flows a sluggish at a rate of a certain distance per day. These are formed due to the recrystallization of ice falling over each other and forming layers. The ice particles at the bottom layers become compact due to the pressure and start to move because of its own weight.
These glaciers generally move in two main ways, that are internal flow and basal sliding. These movements are caused by the frictional drag. The movement is fastest at the surface and slows at the base. Along with the frictional drag, slipping of an ice crystal is also due to the melted ice, known as meltwater. The whole glacier then slides downslope, with the melted ice that acting as a lubricant.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the two ways in which glacier flow are internal flow and base sliding.
