To determine

The name of the system in a confined aquifer in which the water in a well can rise above the top of the aquifer.

Answer to Problem 3TE

If in a confined aquifer, the water in a well can rise above the top of the aquifer, then such a system is called artesian aquifer.

Explanation of Solution

A confined aquifer is an aquifer underneath the land surface that constituted of saturated water. There are layers of impermeable material that lies above as well as below the aquifer. In a confined aquifer, groundwater is confined under pressure between layers of poorly permeable soil. If, in this aquifer, water is raised above the top of the aquifer, then it may even flow out of the well onto the land surface. Water confined in such a way is under artesian pressure and this system is called an artesian aquifer.

Conclusion:

Therefore, if in a confined aquifer, the water in a well can rise above the top of the aquifer, then such a system is called artesian aquifer.
