Chapter 32, Problem 3Q
Summary Introduction

To review:

The reasons why squamates are a better group for the study of the selective forces responsible for the evolution of viviparity compared to mammals.

Given:

The evolution of viviparity in different lineages of the lizard Sceloporus living in different temperature ranges is shown in the figure of the phylogenetic tree given below:

Life: The Science of Biology, Chapter 32, Problem 3Q

Introduction:

In mammals, viviparity evolved only once in the extant lineages about 100 million years ago. In the squamate reptiles, viviparity is believed to have evolved separately more than 100 times. A phylogenetic tree was constructed to study the evolution of a viviparous mode of reproduction from an oviparous mode, under different temperature ranges for the lizard Sceloporus.

Is viviparity a synapomorphy of the mammals? Explain.
Temnospondyl fossils show evidence of a lateral line system in the juveniles, but not in the adults. This suggests that ____. the juveniles relied on filter feeding while the adults did not the juveniles were aquatic whereas the adults were terrestrial the juveniles got most of their oxygen from cutaneous respiration whereas the adults did not the juveniles were terrestrial whereas the adults were aquatic
