Rate of Climb of Aircraft A small Cessna plane takes off from Hyannis Airport. When the plane is 1 mile from the airport, it is flying at an altitude of 3000 feet. When the plane is 2miles from the airport, it is flying at an altitude of 4300 feet. Round your answers to the following questions to the nearest tenth.
a. If the plane continues flying at the same slope (the same rate of climb), what will its altitude be when it is 4.8 miles from the airport?
b. If the plane continues flying at the same rate of climb, how many miles from the airport will it be when it reaches an altitude of 6000 feet?
c. A Lear jet leaves the airport at the same time and has the same altitude (3000 feet) as the Cessna when each plane is 1 mile from the airport. When the jet is 1.8 miles from the airport, it is flying at an altitude of 4040 feet. Is the jet being flown at the same rate of climb as the Cessna?

- A Ramp into a Van Suppose a ramp is used to move a heavy object into a van. Suppose also that the van door is 18 inches off the ground. a. If the bottom of the ramp rests on the ground 4 feet from the van, what is the slope of the ramp? b. If the ramp cannot have a slope of more than 1.2 inches per foot, how far from the van should the ramp rest?arrow_forwardRage of growth When a college started an aviation program, the administration agreed to predict enrollments using a straight-line method. If the enrollment during the first year was 14, and the enrollment during the fifth year was 42, find the average rate of growth per year was 42, find the average rate of growth per year the slope of the line. See the illustration.arrow_forwardContinuation of Exercise S-9 If you move 5 additional feet west, what is the height of the roof above the place where you stand? S-9. Slope from Two Points Take west to be the positive direction. The height of a sloped roof above the place where you stand is 12 feet see Figure 3.28). If you move 3 feet west, the height is 10 feet. What is the slope?arrow_forward
- Road Grade From the top of a mountain road, a surveyor takes several horizontal measurements x and several vertical measurements y, as shown in the table ( x and y are measured in feet). (a) Sketch a scatter plot of the data. (b) Use a straightedge to sketch the line that you think best fits the data. (c) Find an equation for the line you sketched in part (b). (d) Interpret the meaning of the slope of the line in part (c) in the context of the problem. (e) The surveyor needs to put up a road sign that indicates the steepness of the road. For example, a surveyor would put up a sign that states 8grade on a road with a downhill grade that has a slope of 8100. What should the sign state for the road in this problem?arrow_forwardPressure and Depth At the surface of the ocean the water pressure is the same as the air pressure above the water, 15lb/in2. Below the surface the water pressure increases by 4.34lb/in2 for every 10ft of descent. Find an equation for the relationship between the pressure and depth below the ocean surface. Sketch a graph of this linear equation. What do the slope and y-intercept of the graph represent? At what depth is the pressure 100lb/in2?arrow_forwardA Jet of Water The power P of a jet of water is jointly proportional to the cross-sectional area A of the jet and to the cube of the velocity v. a Write an equation that expresses this variation. b If the velocity is doubled and the cross-sectional area is halved, by what factor is the power changed? c If the velocity is halved and the cross-sectional area is tripled, by what factor is the power changed?arrow_forward
