Insulation in a House The R value of insulation in a house is a measure of its ability to resist the loss of heat from the house. The R value of fiberglass insulation is a linear function of its thickness in inches. One type of fiberglass insulation that is 6 inches thick has an R value of 19. The R value in general of this type of insulation is obtained by multiplying 3.2 by the thickness x measured in inches and then adding the result to -0.2. Express the R value of this insulation as a function of x, the thickness in inches. Obtain values of the function when

- The height h of a projectile is a function of the time t it is in die air. The height in feet for t seconds is given by the function h(t)=-16t2+96t . What is the domain of die function? What does the domain mean in the context of die problem?arrow_forwardCeramics When the temperature of a pot in a kiln is 1200, an artist turns off the heat and leaves the pot to cool at a controlled rate of 18 per hour. Express the temperature of the pot in degrees Celsius as a function of the time t in hours since the kiln was turned off.arrow_forwardCliff divers The height s, in feet, of a cliff diver is a function of the time t in seconds he has been falling. If s as a function of t can be expressed as st=-16t2+10t+300, what is the height of the diver at 3 seconds?arrow_forward
- A second baseman throws a baseball toward the first baseman 60 feet away. The path of the baseball is given by the function fx=0.004x2+0.3x+6 where fx is the height of the baseball (in feet) and x is the horizontal distance from the second baseman (in feet). The first baseman can reach 8 feet high. Can the first baseman catch the baseball without jumping?arrow_forwardTarget heart rate The target heart rate f(x), in beats per minute, at which a person should train to get an effective workout is a function of the persons age x in years. If f(x)=0.6x+132, find the target heart rate for a 45-year-old college professor.arrow_forwardAn outpatient operating room charges each patient a fixed amount per surgery plus an amount per minute for use. One patient was charged 250 for a 30-minute surgery and another patient was charged 450 for a 90-minute surgery. Determine the linear function that would be used to compute the charges. Use the function to determine the charge when a patient has a 45-minute surgery.arrow_forward
