Chapter 32, Problem 7P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The mutation in the OR2 gene affects the likelihood of bacteriophage lambda entering the lytic state. The reason for this statement should be determined.

Concept introduction:

The lytic cycle is the rupture of the host cell, resulting in the release of a number of viruses. Bacterial viruses undergo lytic cycle only and are termed as the virulent bacteriophages. These viruses are the cause of their host cells death. Another life cycle of bacteriophage includes a lysogenic cycle. In this cycle, the viral DNA remains in the inactivated state even after various reproduction cycles of the host bacterium. After a certain time only, the viral DNA is released from the host’s cell DNA and undergoes lytic cycle.

Broken operators. Consider a hypothetical mutation in OR2OR 2 that blocks both A repressor and Cro binding. How would this mutation affect the likelihood of bacteriophage entering the lytic phase?
True or False. Explain. A) At no time during protein synthesis does an amino acid make direct contact with the mRNA being translated. B) Because the two strands of DNA are complementary, the mRNA of a gene can be synthesized using either strand as a template.
A cytosine is deaminated. Describe the outcome of this deamination and explain in detail how E. coli repairs this mutation using base excision repair (BER). This repair should contain 5 steps and describe the function of all enzymes or structures.
