IRE (iron response element) is a conserved stem-loop structure which is bound to IRP (iron response proteins). The untranslated regions (UTRs) of mRNAs are bound to IRE. The products of UTRs are involved in iron metabolism. For instance, the 5’ end of mRNA of ferritin contains an IRE group.
