Herbivores and pathogens are likely to attack plants and the plants use structural features like outer bark, cuticles, and epidermal trichomes to protect themselves from herbivore attacks and pathogenic infections. Several secondary metabolites such as terpenes, phenolics, and alkaloids are produced by plants in response to herbivore attacks.
