Concept explainers
To review:
In case of some vertebrates, nasal epithelium synapse directly with the brain neurons that activate behavioral responses to odors. Reviewing the reason for this type of development in animals favored by natural selection.
Introduction:
Animal brains are filled with neurons in which analysis of stimulus, that comes from all over the body takes place. Sensory neurons are associated with sensory organs such as skin, or other sensory organs. They carry impulse to the CNS (central nervous system), that is, the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neuron carries impulse or messages from the brain to the muscles hence, known as a motor neuron. Interneurons are present between these two neurons and they relay and carry electric impulses in between the central nervous system.

- Which of the following physiological systems has undergone selection in cockroaches in response to poison traps placed by humans? a. Tactile sensory neurons to sense human movement b. Visual systems to detect bait traps c. Digestion of glucose in the stomach d. Taste and sensory neuronsarrow_forwardThe sense of pain is transduces by tonic receptors. What adaptive significance might this have? Give typing answer with explanation and conclusionarrow_forwardWhich of the following statements about sensory systems is NOT true? a. Sensory transduction involves the conversion (by either a direct or indirect mechanism) of a physical or chemical stimulus into changes in membrane potential difference. b. Sensory adaptation plays a role in the ability of organisms to discriminate between important and unimportant information. c. The term "sensory adaptation" refers to the process by which a sensory cell becomes less sensitive, or less responsive, to a continuing source of stimulation. d. In general, a stimulus causes a change in the flow of charged ions across the plasma membrane of a sensory receptor cell. e. The more intense a stimulus is, the greater the peak depolarization of the action potentials fired by the sensory neuron.arrow_forward
- Write a Worm neuronal function assay paragraph about a worm neuronal function and find an experiment that could test why the worm may have this worm neuronal function. Such as a worm spiraling. One robust assay of worm behavior is…. “Finish the sentence” and find an experiment that could determine why the worm behavior is this way.arrow_forwardDescribe how a sound pressure wave that arrives at a vertebrate tympanic membrane is converted between various forms of energy (e.g., electrical) before the brain can integrate the information contained in it.arrow_forwardRegarding the sensation of various species, which of the following statements is false? A. The eyes of honeybees transduce parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that are invisible to humans B. Bats ears transduce sound waves that humans cannot hear C. Research has shown that the human eye transducers all of the electromagnetic spectrum to the brain, but the brain is unable to perceive it. D. Sharks have special organs that can sense the bioelectric fields of other living thingsarrow_forward
- All animals do not perceive their environment in the same way. List some examples.arrow_forwardThe brain’s somatosensory cortex does not consist of neurons that receive information equally from all parts of the animal’s body. Describe an example of this by identifying a relevant animal and the body parts that are disproportionately high in neuronal input to the somatosensory cortex.arrow_forwardDistinguish between innate and learned behavior. Explain how an experiment using optogenetics could demonstrate the concept of “fire together, wire together” Predict whether a given change in receptors or neurotransmitter release is likely to strengthen or weaken a synaptic connection. Hypothesize how a channel or another molecule in a plant or animal would detect outside stimuli such as touch, chemicals, or light. Predict how perturbations in light levels, retinal, opsins, and cation channels in photoreceptors affects the photoreceptor’s membrane potential and neurotransmitter release. Given information about a neuron’s responses to stimuli, hypothesize what its receptive field might be.arrow_forward
