Introduction:

The mode of reproduction in which the fusion of female and male gamete takes place outside the female body is known as external fertilization. It occurs in the external medium i.e. water. For example, fish, starfish, frogs, etc. 

External fertilization mostly occurs in a moist place which facilitates the movement of sperm to the egg. The discharge of sperm and eggs into the water is called spawning.
