The specialization of the female reproductive tract is the production and fertilization of the egg and embryo. Gametogenesis occurs within the ovaries and the cells within ovaries secrete estrogens. The cells undergo pronounced anatomical and physiological changes, developing Corpus luteum. In humans, it stays active for the second half of the ovarian cycle.
