Chapter 4, Problem 24P

Women sometimes develop benign tumors called ovarian teratomas or dermoid cysts in their ovaries. Such a tumor begins when a primary oocyte escapes from its prophase I arrest and finishes meiosis I within the ovary. (Normally meiosis I does not finish until the primary oocyte is expelled from the ovary upon ovulation.) The secondary oocyte then develops as if it were an embryo. Development is disorganized, however, and results in a tumor containing differentiated diploid tissues, including teeth, hair, bone, muscle, and nerve. If a dermoid cyst forms in a woman whose genotype is Aa, what are the possible genotypes of the cyst, assuming no recombination?

Oogenesis is the process of female gamete (ovum or egg) production in animals. Spermatogenesis is the process of male gamete (sperm) production in animals. Although both processes produce gamete(s), there are distinct similarities and differences between the two.    Compare and contrast oogenesis to spermatogenesis by drawing a diagram showing the two processes. In your hand-drawn diagrams, be sure to include when the processes of mitosis, meiosis I and meiosis II are occurring identify each germ cell structure and its ploidy highlight 4 differences between the two processes
In a possible future scenario, male fertility drops to zero, but, luckily, scientists develop a way for women to pro-duce babies by virgin birth. Meiocytes are converted di-rectly (without undergoing meiosis) into zygotes, which implant in the usual way. What would be the short- andlong-term effects in such a society?
A primary spermatocyte has the genotype DdEe. These genes assort independently at Meiosis I. Show the chromosomes containing these genes at Metaphase I, Telophase I and Telophase II using diagrams. Diagrams must be clearly labelled and show metacentric chromosomes undergoing meiosis.
