Chapter 4, Problem 4A.1AST
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The work done by water when it freezes at 0°C has to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

The system can done two kind of works.  The one is the work of expansion which is the work that arises from the change in the volume of the system.  On the other hand, the second work done is the work of non-expansion which does not involve any change in the volume of the system.  The expression for calculating the work of expansion is shown below.

    w=PexΔV

Explanation of Solution

As per the data given in the question, the densities of water and ice at 0°C is 1.00gcm3 and 0.92gcm3 respectively.  The applied opposing pressure is 1070atm.

Therefore, the initial and final volume of 100g water is 92.0cm3 and 100cm3 when water is in the form of solid and liquid respectively.

The change in volume is calculated by using the relation given below.

  ΔV=VfVi        (1)

Where,

  • ΔV is the change in volume.
  • Vi is the initial volume.
  • Vf is the final volume.

The value of Vi is 92.0cm3.

The value of Vf is 100cm3.

Substitute the value of Vi and Vf in equation (1).

    ΔV=100cm392.0cm3=8.00cm3×0.001L1cm3=8×103L

Therefore, the change in volume of the given system is 8×103L.

The relation for calculating the work of expansion by the automobile engine is shown below.

  w=PexΔV        (2)

Where,

  • w is the work done.
  • Pex is the external pressure.
  • ΔV is the change in volume.

The value of Pex is 1070atm.

The value of ΔV is 8×103L.

Substitute the value of Pex and ΔV in equation (1).

    w=(1070atm)×(8×103L)=8.56Latm×101.325J1Latm×1kJ1000J=0.86kJ

Thus, the work done by the water when it freezes at 0°C is -0.86kJ_.
