Chapter 4.12, Problem 8P

As technology advances and new materials are synthesized, there are certain products that receive only minimal, if any, modernization attempts. Among them are the shopping carts used in grocery stores. There is a tendency to save parking spaces by not designating a return cart area. Leaving carts in the parking lots may lead to serious accidents and car damage. Furthermore, although many customers do not fill their carts that much when t shopping, they do not like to carry baskets. Other customers like to sort products as they shop. Develop an objective tree to clarify the need statement and prioritize the objectives laid out in the problem statement. You may add features that may not be listed clearly in the problem statement but will give an additional advantage to the proposed design.

A flow-line mass production operation consists of six manual workstations. Work units are moved synchronously and automatically between stations, with a transfer time of 10 secs. The manual processing operations performed at the six stations take 45 sec, 50 sec, 40 sec, 42 sec, 30 sec, and 55 sec, respectively.  Determine (a) cycle time for the line, (b) time to process one work until through the six workstations, (c) average production rate, and (d) time to produce 20,000 units.
