Answer to Problem 17PP

The kinetic energy of the car increases four times when the car doubles its speed.

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

Mass of the car, m=1500 kg

Speed of the car, v1=50 km/h, v2=100 km/h

Formula used:

Kinetic Energy Equation:

  KE=12mv2

Where KE is the kinetic energy of the object in joules, m is the mass of the object in kg and v is the speed of the object in m/s .

Calculation:

As per the problem,

  m=1500kg

To calculate the kinetic energy when the speed of the car is v1=50 km/h , first convert kilometer per hour into meter per second.

  v1=50 km/h1 km=1000 m1 h=3600 sv1=50×1000 m3600 s=13.89 m/s

Substitute the values of mass and speed in the kinetic energy equation:

  KE1=12mv12KE1=12(1500 kg)(13.89 m/s)2KE1=144699.01 J144700 J

To calculate the kinetic energy when the speed of the car is v2=100 km/h , first convert kilometer per hour into meter per second.

  v1=100 km/h1 km=1000 m1 h=3600 sv2=100×1000 m3600 s=27.78 m/s

Substitute the values of mass and speed in the kinetic energy equation:

  KE2=12mv22KE2=12(1500 kg)(27.78 m/s)2KE2=578796.3 J578,800 J

The increase in kinetic energy = KE2KE1=578,800 J144,700 J=4 times

Conclusion:

The kinetic energy of the car increases four times when the car doubles its speed.
