The adeonise triphosphate (ATP) molecules is the energy currency of the cell. This molecules is essential for the proper functioning of the cell. In prokaryotes the ATP molecules are produced by the glycolysis reaction of the glucose. In eukaryotes the ATP molecules are produced by the electron transport chain of mitochondria. This cellular respiration requires oxygen molecules. In ceratin cases the cell molecules performs the anaerobic respiration which does not requires the oxygen molecules.
