Introduction:
The energy possessed by a body because of it being in motion is called kinetic energy. In an object, each particle possesses a different value of kinetic energy in it. The sum total of kinetic energies of all the particles of a system is the average kinetic energy.
According to the kinetic molecular theory, the average kinetic energy of a body is related to the temperature of the body. As and when a substance is heated, the absorbed energy is utilized in two different ways: some part is stored in the particles of that body while some part of the absorbed energy is utilized in increasing the motion of its particles. As the temperature supplied to a body increases, its particles gain more energy and start moving more vigorously and hence its motion increases. Thus, the temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of a body.
