Chapter 6, Problem 13A
Summary Introduction

To write:

How the method of adhesion used by geckos to climbs on smooth surfaces such as glass using van Waals forces is more advantageous than covalent interactions.

Introduction:

Gecko climbs on smooth surface such as glass using van der Waals force. Geckos are lizards that have modified one of the best effective adhesives known. By using millions of small hairs on their feet they adhere to smooth surface and walls because of van der Waals forces.

Expert Solution & Answer

Explanation of Solution

Gecko toes are covered in tiny ridges, which are called as setae. Though the hairs are small and the forces are weak, the thousands of hairs working together help these reptiles to climb up and around. The spatulae on the bottom of geckos' feet have contact with the surface through van der Waals forces. Van der Waal forces are intermolecular attractions that create temporary dipoles. These forces have closer molecules that are also flexible, so they attract other substances.

Conclusion

So, in this way the method of adhesion is more advantageous than covalent interactions.
