Chapter 6, Problem 34A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation :

Right option must be chosen in which the pair of compounds have same empirical formula.

Concept Introduction :

Empirical formula is representation of simplest ratio of number of atoms in the molecule. It does not tell the actual number of atoms in the molecule.

Answer to Problem 34A

Correct answer Option A and C are correct.

Explanation of Solution

Reason for correct option:

The two compounds have molecular formula C2H2 and C6H6. For these two compounds the empirical formula is CH which is present 2 times in acetylene (C2H2) and 6 times in benzene (C6H6).

Option C is correct as NO2 and N2O4 have empirical formula NO2 which is present 1 time in NO2 and 2 times in N2O4.

Conclusion

Reasons for incorrect options:

Option B is incorrect as C2H6 and C4H10 have empirical formulae CH3 and C2H5 respectively which are not the same.

Option D is incorrect as C12H10O and C6H6O have different empirical formulae which are C12H10O and C6H6O respectively.
