Concept explainers
Interpretation :
The information needed to find out the molecular formula when empirical formula is known must be explained.
Concept Introduction :
Empirical formula of a molecule is the smallest unit which is repeated in the molecule.
Molecular formula of a compound is the representation of the molecule with the number of different atoms present in the molecule.
Molecular formula
Answer to Problem 45A
The molecular weight or vapor density or any information which can help to find molecular weight of the compound must also be known.
Explanation of Solution
The molecular formula can be found from the empirical formula using the following relationship.
Molecular formula
Molecular formula can be found if vapor density is given using the formula
So if either molecular weight or vapor density is given then molecular formula can be found from empirical formula. Any other information from which M or D can be calculated will be useful in finding molecular formula from empirical formula.
The molecular formula of a new compound for which empirical formula is given can be found using molecular weight or vapor density.
