Concept explainers
Interpretation:
By using examples to illustrate lone pair, Lewis structure, octet rule, and bond length has to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Lone pair: A pair of electrons occupying an orbital in an atom or molecule and not directly involved in bonding is known as lone pair.
Lewis structure: A Lewis structure is a representation of covalent bonding in which shared electron pairs are shown either as dashes or as pairs of dots between two atoms, and lone pairs are shown as pairs of dots on individual atoms. Only valence electrons are shown in a Lewis structure.
Octet rule: Octet rule states that to achieve a noble gas electron configuration, atoms will lose, gain, or share electrons.
Bond length: The average distance between nuclei of two bonded atoms in a molecule is known as bond length.
