Chapter 6.SE, Problem 50AP
Draw the structures of the two carbocation intermediates that might form during the reaction of 2-methylpropene with HBr (Problem 6-49). We’ll see in the next chapter that the stability of carbocations depends on the number of alkyl substituents attached to the positively charged carbon—the more alkyl substituents there are, the more stable the cation. Which of the two carbocation intermediates you drew is more stable?

The solvolysis of 2-bromo-3-methylbutane potentially can give several products, includingboth E1 and SN1 products from both the unrearranged carbocation and the rearrangedcarbocation. Mechanisms 6-6 (page 282) and 7-2 (previous page) show the products fromthe rearranged carbocation. Summarize all the possible products, showing which carbocationthey come from and whether they are the products of E1 or SN1 reactions.
For each reaction, decide whether substitution or elimination (or both) is possible, andpredict the products you expect. Label the major products. chlorocyclohexane + NaOC(CH3)3 in (CH3)3COH
The following reaction makes four (4) products. Predict all four products, state the most stable product and write a stepwise mechanism for only the major product showing ALL intermediates. Use curved arrows to symbolize the flow of electrons to show how each of the intermediates and product are formed. Show all necessary lone pairs and formal charges.
I only got three, why is it four?
