Concept explainers
As an alternative to diffusible signals, suggest another mechanism by which bacteria might quorum sense.
Many bacteria use cell-cell signalling to regulate the expression of various factors that contributes to virulence. Bacteria generate signals of a wide range of structural classes. Diffusable signal factor (DSF) is a signal molecule, a cis-unsaturated fatty acid, involved in interspecies signalling, which modulates behaviours of numerous bacteria.
Explanation of Solution
There are various mechanisms available by which bacteria may quorum sense. This may include cell-cell communication by means of flagella, fimbriae, and pili, or other extracellular appendages. This is significant in the case of Dictyostelium and Myxobacteria. This cell-cell communication is collectively termed as multicellular behaviour in which numerous bacterial cells communicate and coordinate their actions as a unit. The use of extracellular vacuoles is considered as an emerging observation in cell-cell communication. Other examples of such complex behaviour include pattern formation in colonies and the formation of a fruiting body in the Myxobacteria. In eukaryotic developmental model systems, there are some examples, which is significant for direct cell-cell communication, like receptor on one cell and ligand on the other cell.

- Soil bacteria such as Streptomyces spp. produce the bulk of known antibiotics. It has been suggested that in nature antibiotics serve as signaling molecules, allowing members of the same species or strain to communicate. - What advantage do quorum-sensing systems confer onbacterial cells?arrow_forwardFigure 9.17 Which of the following statements about quorum sensing is false? Autoinducer must bind to receptor to turn on transcription of genes responsible for the production of more autoinducer. The receptor stays in the bacterial cell but the autoinducer diffuses out. Autoinducer can only act on a different cell: it cannot act on the cell in which it is made. Autoinducer turns on genes that enable the bacteria to form a biofilm.arrow_forwardDescribe the reason behind the occurrence of phage growth and release by the mating with the non-lysogenic recipient, but not with the infection by a lysogenic recipient.arrow_forward
