Concept explainers
Flexible budget, direct materials, and direct manufacturing labor variances. Emerald Statuary manufactures bust statues of famous historical figures. All statues are the same size. Each unit requires the same amount of resources. The following information is from the static budget for 2017:
Expected production and sales | 7,000 units |
Expected selling price per unit | $ 680 |
Total fixed costs | $1,400,000 |
Standard quantities, standard prices, and standard unit costs follow for direct materials and direct manufacturing labor:
During 2017, actual number of units produced and sold was 4,800, at an average selling price of $720. Actual cost of direct materials used was $392,700, based on 66,000 pounds purchased at $5.95 per pound. Direct manufacturing labor-hours actually used were 18,300, at the rate of $48 per hour. As a result, actual direct

- Nashler Company has the following budgeted variable costs per unit produced: Budgeted fixed overhead costs per month include supervision of 98,000, depreciation of 76,000, and other overhead of 245,000. Required: 1. Prepare a flexible budget for all costs of production for the following levels of production: 160,000 units, 170,000 units, and 175,000 units. 2. What is the per-unit total product cost for each of the production levels from Requirement 1? (Round each unit cost to the nearest cent.) 3. What if Nashler Companys cost of maintenance rose to 0.22 per unit? How would that affect the unit product costs calculated in Requirement 2?arrow_forwardFactory overhead cost variance report Tannin Products Inc. prepared the following factory overhead cost budget for the Trim Department for July of the current year, during which it expected to use 20,000 hours for production: Tannin has available 25,000 hours of monthly productive capacity in the Trim Department under normal business conditions. During July, the Trim Department actually used 22,000 hours for production. The actual fixed costs were as budgeted. The actual variable overhead for July was as follows: Construct a factory overhead cost variance report for the Trim Department for July.arrow_forwardRefer to Cornerstone Exercise 8.13. In March, Nashler Company produced 163,200 units and had the following actual costs: Required: 1. Prepare a performance report for Nashler Company comparing actual costs with the flexible budget for actual units produced. 2. What if Nashler Companys actual direct materials cost were 1,175,040? How would that affect the variance for direct materials? The total cost variance?arrow_forward
- Flexible budget for factory overhead Presented below are the monthly factory overhead cost budget (at normal capacity of 5,000 units or 20,000 direct labor hours) and the production and cost data for a month. The predetermined overhead rate is based on normal capacity. Required: 1. Assuming that variable costs will vary in direct proportion to the change in volume, prepare a flexible budget for production levels of 80%, 90%, and 110% of normal capacity. Also determine the predetermined factory overhead rate at each level of volume in both units and direct labor hours. 2. Prepare a flexible budget for production levels of 80%, 90%, and 110%, assuming that variable costs will vary in direct proportion to the change in volume, but with the following exceptions. (Hint: Set up a third category for semi-variable expenses.) a. At 110% of capacity, another supervisor will be needed at a salary of 24,000 annually. b. At 80% of capacity, the repairs expense will drop to one-half of the amount at 100% capacity. c. At 80% of capacity, one part-time maintenance worker, earning 10,000 a year, will be laid off. d. At 110% of capacity, a machine not normally in use and on which no depreciation is normally recorded will be used in production. Its cost was 12,000, it has a 10-year life, and straight-line depreciation will be taken.arrow_forwardCold X, Inc. uses this information when preparing their flexible budget: direct materials of $2 per unit, direct labor of $3 per unit, and manufacturing overhead of $1 per unit. Fixed costs are $35,000. What would be the budgeted amounts for 20,000 and 25,000 units?arrow_forwardFargo Co. manufactures products in batches of 100 units per batch. The company uses a standard cost system and prepares budgets that call for 500 of these batches per period. Budgeted fixed overhead is $60,000 per period. The standard costs per batch follow: During the period, 503 batches were manufactured, and the following costs were incurred: Required: Calculate the variances for materials, labor, and overhead. For overhead, use the two-variance method. (Hint: Please use the information given about the budgeted fixed overhead to compute the variable overhead rate.)arrow_forward
- Using the following per-unit and total amounts, prepare a flexible budget at the 14,000-, 15,000-, and 16,000-unit levels of production and sales for Natural Products Inc.:arrow_forwardFlexible budgeting and variance analysis Im Really Cold Coat Company makes womens and mens coats. Both products require filler and lining material. The following planning information has been made available: Im Really Cold Coat Company does not expect there to be any beginning or ending inventories of filler and lining material. At the end of the budget year, Im Really Cold Coat Company experienced the following actual results: The expected beginning inventory and desired ending inventory were realized. Instructions 1. Prepare the following variance analyses for both coats and the total, based on the actual results and production levels at the end of the budget year: A. Direct materials price, quantity, and total variance. B. Direct labor rate, time, and total variance. 2. Why are the standard amounts in part (1) based on the actual production at the end of the year instead of the planned production at the beginning of the year?arrow_forwardThe normal capacity of a manufacturing plant is 30,000 direct labor hours or 20,000 units per month. Standard fixed costs are 6,000, and variable costs are 12,000. Data for two months follow: For each month, make a single journal entry to charge overhead to Work in Process, to close Factory Overhead, and to record variances. Indicate the types of variances and state whether each is favorable or unfavorable. (Hint: You must first compute the flexible-budget and production-volume variances.)arrow_forward
- Titanium Blades refines titanium for use in all brands of razor blades. It prepared a static budget for the sales of 5,000 units. These variances were observed: Determine the static budget and use the information to prepare a flexible budget and analysis for the 6,000 units actually sold.arrow_forwardBudgeted unit sales for the entire countertop oven industry were 2,500,000 (of all model types), and actual unit sales for the industry were 2,550,000. Recall from Cornerstone Exercise 18.6 that Iliff, Inc., provided the following information: Required: 1. Calculate the market share variance (take percentages out to four significant digits). 2. Calculate the market size variance. 3. What if Iliff actually sold a total of 41,000 units (in total of the two models)? How would that affect the market share variance? The market size variance?arrow_forwardJudges Gavel uses this information when preparing their flexible budget: direct materials of $3 per unit, direct labor of $2.50 per unit, and manufacturing overhead of $1.25 per unit. Fixed costs are $49,000. What would be the budgeted amounts for 33,000 and 35,000 units?arrow_forward
