Weather Prediction A local TV station employs Desmorelda, “Mistress of the Zodiac,” as its weather fore-caster. Now, when it rains, Sagittarius is in the shadow of Jupiter one-third of the time, and it rains on 4 out of every 50 days. Sagittarius falls in Jupiter’s shadow on only 1 in every 5 rainless days. The powers that be at the station notice a disturbing pattern to Desmorelda’s weather predictions. It seems that she always predicts that it will rain when Sagittarius is in the shadow of Jupiter. What percentage of the time is she correct? Should they replace her?

Tutorial Exercise You may need to use the appropriate appendix table or technology to answer this question. Consider a multiple-choice examination with 50 questions. Each question has four possible answers. Assume that a student who has done the homework and attended lectures has a 60% chance of answering any question correctly. (a) A student must answer 45 or more questions correctly to obtain a grade of A. What percentage of the students who have done their homework and attended lectures will obtain a grade of A on this multiple-choice examination? Use the normal approximation of the binomial distribution to answer this question. (b) A student who answers 36 to 39 questions correctly will receive a grade of C. What percentage of students who have…arrow_forward

- Nilesh .parrow_forwardPart a and b are the ones I am stuck onarrow_forwardQuestion: 2. Fred is testing a large prize wheel which has the numbers one, two, three, and four repeated along its circumference. When Fred spun the wheel 80 times, the wheel stopped at a one 12 times, at a two 20 times, at a three 20 times, and at a four 28 times. Fred then oiled the wheel and spun it an additional 120 times. This time he obtained frequencies of 12, 20, 32, and 56 respectively. Fred was careful to spin the wheel in the same manner each time. a) Does the wheel behave differently after being oiled? (α ≤ .05) b) When the wheel is oiled, is the probability of occurrence of a number proportional to the number (i.e., does the wheel stop at a two twice as often as at a one, etc.)? Use α ≤ .05. Answers: 2. a) χ2 = 10.133, reject H0: the wheel does behave differently after being oiled; b) χ2 = 2.44, do not reject H0: it appears that the probability of occurrence of a number is proportional to the number (there is no evidence to reject this).
