Blueberry, Inc. is a cell phone manufacturer serving the North American market. Current annual demand of their product in North America is 5,000,000. Over the next two years, demand in North America is expected to go up by 50 percent with a probability of 0.80, or go down by 15 percent with a probability of 0.20. Blueberry, Inc. currently has a production facility in N. America with a capacity of 5,000,000 units per year while the variable production cost per phone is $10. Each phone sells for $35.
Blueberry, Inc. is contemplating on adding 5,000,000 units of capacity to the plant which will incur an additional fixed cost of $75,000,000. Assume that Blueberry, Inc. uses a discount factor of 12 percent.
What is the probability that the demand will be more than 10,000,000?
The owner of Tidye Food restaurant has exclusive rights to operate in Lilongwe city. The owner currently has a single outlet open, which has proved to be very popular, and there are often waiting lines of customers. The owner is therefore considering opening one or more outlets in the city. What are the key factors that the owner should investigate before making a final decision? What trade-offs would there be in opening one additional site versus opening several additional sites?
Dave Escalona, a DLSL Computer Engineering graduate, is considering the possibility of opening a small computer shop at SM City Lipa, a few blocks from the school. His options are to open a small shop, a medium-sized shop or no shop at all. The market for the computer shop can be good, average or bad. The probabilities for these possibilities are 0.2 for good market, 0.5 for average market and 0.3 for bad market. The net profit or loss for the medium-sized or small shop for the various market conditions are given in the table below. Building no shop also yields no loss and no gain. What do you recommend?

- Chatham Automotive purchased new electric forklifts to move steel automobile parts two years ago. They cost $65,000 each, including the charging stand. In practice, it was found that they did not hold a charge as long as claimed by the manufacturer, so operating costs are very high. As a result, their current salvage value is about $9,000. Chatham is considering replacing them with propane models. New propane forklifts cost $58,000 each. After one year, they have a salvage value of $40,000, and thereafter decline in value at a declining-balance depreciation rate of 20 percent, as does the electric model from this time on. The MARR is 8 percent. Operating costs for the electric model will be $19,000 this year, rising by 12 percent per year. Operating costs for the propane model will initially be $11,000 over the first year, rising by 12 percent per year. Should Chatham Automotive replace the forklifts now? Until 2010, the school had experienced strong growth, but since 2013 the enrolment numbers for Year 7 have been less than half of what they were in 2010. The Selena Valley is 50 minutes east of Melbourne and has had a recent influx of young families, but prior to this influx it was a small area with solid growth figures. Selena Valley High School is a coeducational institution with strong links to the local area in terms of apprenticeships and vocational education. The enrolment numbers for 2016 were 378 students from Years 7 to 12. Answer the following questions. 1. What is the major issue Selena Valley High School faces as of 2018 in terms of its customer base? 2. The manager of the firm considers whether to extend a long-term contract with the current company who has done business with the firm in the past and whose distribution system reaches 60% of all potential customers. The second option is to sign a one-year contract with a new distribution company. The new company used to reach only 30% of customers, but they claim that they have invested heavily over the past year in distribution resources and now expect to be able to reach 80% of customers. The manager is not that sure about the new company’s claim and give them about 50% of trust. If the new distributor still covers only 30% in year 1, however, the company can switch back to the familiar old distributor. The manager of the firm wants to develop two-scenario plans: 3-year and 10-year planning horizon. Which distributor should the manager choose for each plan? Show your analysis.arrow_forward

The fast-growing company is looking to reduce expenses wherever it can. Call center manager Doug Espinosa wants to look at placing a call center outside of the U.S., possibly in India, possibly in the Philippines, but more than like somewhere in South East Asia, in an effort to reduce labor costs. Corporate director Bonnie Kovach, on the other hand, would like to keep the call center in the U.S. in order to provide jobs to American citizens as well as support calls to improve national competitiveness. Both Doug and Bonnie are concerned with the fact that company profits have been slowing over the past three quarters. *** Question | Which of the following, if true, would strengthen call center manager Doug Espinosa’s argument for moving a portion of the business to another country?
