A study in Pittsburgh measured various cardiovascular risk factors in children at birth and during their first 5 years of life [6]. In particular, heart rate was assessed at birth, 5 months, 15 months, 24 months, and annually thereafter until 5 years of age. Heart rate was related to age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status. The data in Table 8.13 were presented relating heart rate to race among newborns.
