Chapter 8, Problem 4P
The mean ±1 sd of ln [calcium intake (mg)] among 25 females, 12 to 14 years of age, below the poverty level is 6.56 ± 0.64. Similarly, the mean ± 1 sd of ln [calcium intake (mg)] among 40 females, 12 to 14 years of age, above the poverty level is 6.80 ± 0.76.
Implement the procedure in Problem 8.3 using the critical-value method.

Problem:
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of synthetic oil-like chemicals that were at one time widely used as insulation in electrical equipment and were discharged into rivers. They were discovered to be a health hazard, and were banned in the 1970s. Assume that water samples are being drawn from a river in order to estimate the PCB concentration. Suppose that a random sample of size 60 has a sample mean of 1.96 parts per billion (ppb). Assume the population standard deviation is σ = 0.35 ppb.
Construct a 98% confidence interval for the PCB concentration.
EPA standards require that the PCB concentration in drinking water be no more than 0.5 ppb. Based on the confidence interval, is it reasonable to believe that this water meets the EPA standard for drinking water? Explain.

Suppose we eventually plan to accumulate 50 MI cases during the period 2010-2015. Suppose that 20% of the patients with MI in 2000 died within 24 hours. This proportion is called the 24 hour case fatality rate. A test is performed to see if the true proportion of 24 hour case fatality rate differs from 20%, with significance level of 0.01.
