Every 5 years a city conducts a survey of residents to collect data on various political, economic, an health indicators. With a new survey coming this year the mayor is especially concerned with jobs and the economy. In the last survey only 41% of people in the city said they felt very secure in their job. The mayor wants to be able to estimate that proportion for this year to within a margin of error of +/- 2%. How large of a sample will be needed.
The forced vital capacity (FVC) is often used by physicians to assess a person's ability to move air in and out of their lungs. It is the maximum amount of air that can be exhaled after a deep breath. A researcher wants to perform a hypothesis test to determine whether the mean forced vital capacity for adults who are smokers is less than the mean forced vital capacity for adults who are former smokers. He will use a paired sample to determine whether forced vital capacity increases, on average, when adults stop smoking. Identify the two populations for the proposed hypothesis test.

- Doritos chips are one of the most popular chips in the year 2020. Frito-Lay produces snack-sized bags of Doritos with 1.75-ounce bags. Unfortunately, Frito-Lay has received many complaints that the bags of chips lack the promised amount of chips. PepsiCo, the owner of Frito-Lay, decide to run an internal investigation of their Doritos chip production. They sample around 500 bags of chips to discover that they found an average of 1.59 ounces with a standard deviation of .12 ounces. Conduct a hypothesis test with an alpha-level of .05. Should they change their production of Doritos chips to match the 1.75 ounces on the bag?arrow_forward“The Rule of 40”, a principle according to which software company’s combined “Revenue growth rate” and “Operating margin” should exceed 40%, has gained momentum as a high-level gauge of performance for software businesses. - Use the data set CPS2015 described in Empirical Exercise 8.2 (You can search the data on the text website http://www.pearsonhighered.com/stock_watson/, where you will find a data file CPS2015, which contains data for full-time, full-year workers, age 25-34, with a high school diploma or B.A./B.S. as their highest degree. A detailed description is given in CPS2015_Description, also available on website). Based on the 2015 data E8 1.2 (l) concluded: Earnings for those with a college education are higher than those with a high school degree, and earnings of the college educated increase more rapidly early in their careers (age 25–34). Earnings for men are higher than those of women, and earnings of men increase more rapidly early in their careers (age 25–34). For all categories of workers (men/women, high school/college) earnings increase more rapidly from age 25–32 than from 32–34. It was subsequently adopted by most states as an official holiday. In a poll by Gallup, 1000 randomly selected adults were asked whether they approve of labor unions; 650 said yes. In 1936, about 72% of Americans approved of labor unions. At a 5% level of significance, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that the percentage of Americans who approve of labor unions now has decreased since 1936? Solve using the critical-value approach. a. Define the parameter we are testing and setup a hypothesis test to see if less than 72% of Americans approve of labor unions currently. b. Calculate the test statistics for this hypothesis test. c. What is the critical value for this hypothesis test?arrow_forwardData are collected in a clinical trial evaluating a new compound designed to improve wound healing in trauma patients. The new compound is compared against a placebo. After treatment for 5 days with the new compound or placebo, the extent of wound healing is measured and the data are shown in Table 7.6. Is there a difference in the extent of wound healing by treatment? (Hint: Are treatment and the percentage of wound healing independent?) Run the appropriate test at a 5% level of significance. - Color blindness, or dyschromatopsia, is a form of genetic deficiency in color perception. The condition is much more prevalent among males than females, pointing to a genetic connection with the X chromosome. The frequency of dyschromatopsia in the Caucasian American male population is about 7%. However, it is thought that this proportion might be smaller among males of other ethnicities. We want to estimate the proportion of Asian American males who are color-blind. How large a sample size do we need in order to obtain a 95% confidence interval with a margin of error no greater than 5%, or 0.05? - The cost of textbooks relative to other expenses has risen greatly over thepast few years, and university officials have started to include the average amount expended on textbook in the estimated yearly expenses for students. In order for these estimates to be useful, they should be within $25 of the mean expenditure for all undergraduate students at the university. How many students should the university sample in order to build 95% confident that its estimated cost of the textbooks will satisfy the stated level of accuracy ?From the data collected in previous year the university officials have determined the annual expenditure for textbooks has normal distribution with cost ranging from $250 to $750.arrow_forwardMedical Researcher believe that 11% of women have a certain generic marker.
