Summary Introduction

To fill:

The sequence of events that lead to fermentation in aerobic organisms.

Introduction:

The cells of most living organisms produce energy (ATP) from glucose by using oxygen in aerobic cellular respiration. Some organisms can also produce ATP from glucose without using oxygen through anaerobic respiration. The way of making ATP without oxygen is fermentation. Fermentation may alcoholic fermentation or lactic acid fermentation.

Answer to Problem 6MI

The sequence of event of fermentation is given below:

Biology Science Notebook, Chapter 8.3, Problem 6MI

Explanation of Solution

During cellular respiration, living organisms make ATP from glucose. This process occurs in three stages: glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and electron transport. The Krebs cycle and electron transport require oxygen. There are also other ways, such as anaerobic respiration and fermentation, of making ATP from glucose without oxygen is called fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation produces ethanol and NAD+. The NAD+ allows glycolysis to continue making ATP. The NAD+ cycles back to allow glycolysis to continue so more ATP is made.
