Concept Introduction:
FCFS basis- Normally, there is a process in attending the jobs or, customers. FCFS basis means attending a job or customer on First come first serve basis. In other words, the job/customer which/who comes first is attended first.
b.
Interpretation: The mean flow time and weighted mean flow time have to be computed if the patients are scheduled of SPT sequencing.
Concept Introduction:
SPT: SPT when expanded becomes shortest processing time. In the rule, the jobs must be arranged in increasing order according to the processing time.
c.
Interpretation: A suitable sequence has to be made that provides a lower weighted mean flow time value than FCFS and SPT sequencing.
Concept Introduction:
Optimal sequence: It is supposed to be sequence or series of jobs that has to take place to minimize the idle time and at the same time all the jobs are completed.

- The following set of seven jobs is to be processed through two work centers at George Heinrich's printing company. The sequence is first printing, then binding. Processing timeat each of the work centers is shown in the following table: a) What is the optimal sequence for these jobs to be scheduled?b) Chart these jobs through the two work centers.c) What is the total length of time of this optimal solution?d) What is the idle time in the binding shop, given the optimal solution?e) How much would the binding machine's idle time be cut by splitting Job Z in half?arrow_forwardIn a few words, explain how to prevent a process getting starved in priority scheduling.arrow_forwardWhat are the benefits and drawbacks of the shortest processing time rule (SPT)?arrow_forward
- where the consulting company has five jobs in its backlog. Create a schedule usingthe EDD rule, calculating the average days past due and flow time. In this case, does EDD outperformthe FCFS rule?arrow_forwardThe SOT rule provides an optimal solution in a number of evaluation criteria. Should the manager of a bank use the SOT rule as a priority rule? Why?arrow_forwardFive jobs must be scheduled for batch processing on a mainframe computer system. The processing times and the promised times for each of the jobs are listedhere.Job 1 2 3 4 5Processing time 40 min 2.5 hr 20 min 4 hr 1.5 hrPromised time 11:00 A.M. 2:00 P.M. 2:00 P.M. 1:00 P.M. 4:00 P.M.Assume that the current time is 10:00 A.M.a. If the jobs are scheduled according to SPT, find the tardiness of each job and themean tardiness of all jobs.b. Repeat the calculation in part (a) for EDD schedulingarrow_forward
- The following jobs are waiting to be processed at the same machine center. Jobs are logged as they arrive: In what sequence would the jobs be ranked according to the following decision rules: (a) FCFS, (b) EDD, (c) SPT, and (d) LPT? Alldates are specified as manufacturing planning ca.lendar days. Assumethat all jobs arrive on day 275. Which decision is best and why?arrow_forwardFor a single machine scheduling problem, what priority rule guarantees that the average (mean) flow time is minimized?arrow_forwardAnalyze scheduling problems using priority rules and more specialized techniques.arrow_forward
- A mortgage service office has the following four activities involved in approving a loan application. Note that a working day is 8 hours and there are 60 minutes in one hour. Activity Time (minutes) A. Property survey 24 B. Credit report 19 C. Title search 18 D. Final decision 20 The office has three employees, activities A, B and C are combined together and assigned to two employees, while the other employee is responsible for the last activity D. Under this setting, what would be the maximum number of loan applications the office can process per day? Numbers only, keep three decimals if not exact, either round up or down is okarrow_forwardThe first five columns of the following table contain information about a set of four jobs that just arrived (end of Hour 0 or beginning of Hour 1) at an engine lathe. They are the only ones now waiting to be processed. Several operations, including the one at the engine lathe, remain to be done on each job. Determine the schedule by using (a) the CR rule and (b) the S/RO rule. Compare these schedules to those generated by FCFS, SPT, and EDD.
