Given:

The mass of the 1st cart, m1=5.0kg

The mass of the 2nd cart, m2=2.0kg

Final velocity of 1st cart after the release, v1f=0.12m/s

Formula used:

Momentum of an object of mass m and moving with velocity v is given by,

  p=mv

And, law of conservation of linear momentum: Momentum is conserved in a closed and isolated system and is given by,

  pi=pf

Calculation:

Consider both the carts as a system, then it will be a closed and isolated system and law of conservation of momentum can be applied to it.

Assume the final direction of 1st cart’s motion as positive. And, since initially both the carts was at rest, hence,

  v1i=v2i=0m/s

Let, the final velocity of the 2.0kg cart, that is 2nd cart be v2f , then using the law of conservation of linear momentum,

  pi=pfm1v1i+m2v2i=m1v1f+m2v2f

Using given values in above,

  (5)(0)+(2)(0)=(5)(0.12)+(2)(v2f)v2f=0.3m/s

Negative sign of the above velocity denotes that after the collision, the second cart moves in the opposite direction of 1st cart’s final motion.
