Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 22PP

  2m/s in the opposite direction of 1st ball’s initial motion.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The mass of the 1st ball, m1=0.5kg

The mass of the 2nd ball, m2=1.00kg

Initial velocity of 1st ball, v1i=6.0m/s

Initial velocity of 2nd ball, v2i=12.0m/s in the opposite direction of 1st ball’s motion.

After colliding, the final velocity of the 1st ball, v1f=14m/s backwards.

Formula used:

Momentum of an object of mass m and moving with velocity v is given by,

  p=mv

And, law of conservation of linear momentum: Momentum is conserved in a closed and isolated system and is given by,

  pi=pf

Calculation:

Consider both the balls as a system, then it will be a closed and isolated system and law of conservation of momentum can be applied to it.

Assume the initial direction of 1st ball’s motion as positive and backward direction as negative, then the given velocities can be written as,

  v1i=6.0m/sv2i=12.0m/sv1f=14.0m/s

Let, the final speed of the 1.00kg ball, that is 2nd ball be v2f , then using the law of conservation of linear momentum,

  pi=pfm1v1i+m2v2i=m1v1f+m2v2f

Using given values in above,

  (0.5)(6)+(1.0)(12)=(0.5)(14)+(1.0)(v2f)v2f=(312+7)m/sv2f=2m/s

Negative sign of the above velocity denotes that after the collision the second ball moves in the opposite direction of 1st ball’s initial motion.

Conclusion:

Thus, the final speed of the 1.00kg ball is 2m/s in the opposite direction of 1st ball’s initial motion.
