MARKETING 411- CONSUMER BEHAVIOR IN DIGITAL MEDIA
ASSIGNMENT 2, WEEK 4-
CASE STUDY, BEYONCE’S BEYHIVE
Read the Case Study at the end of chapter 7, page 265, and
answer questions CS 7-2 and CS 7-3.
1.
CS 7-2 Describe Beyoncé’s brand personality. How does it
compare with other celebrity brand personalities with which
you’re familiar?
Beyonce is best known for her music career all over the world. Her
music is encouraging as it talks about building up self-confidence
within ourselves. Her music is high on energy and that motivates
her fans to feel and be confident and outspoken. Beyonce’s brand
personality is very authentic, as she has been a female
empowerment figure since her rise to fame in the early 2000’s.
Beyonce is seen as genuine and true to herself in her
performances and music career. She embodies courage and
empowerment throughout her career, which has earned her a
reputation as one of the most empowering women in the industry.
People associate a sense of power and empowerment with
Beyonce, even her nickname suggests strength, as the Queen Bee
of her Beehive of fans, she is leading them to empowerment
(Banks, 2023). Therefore, audiences associate a powerful or
empowering imagery with the Queen Bee herself. As a result,
members of the Beyhive often share a common characteristic of
feeling confident and outspoken.
Comparing Beyonce's brand personality with other celebrity brand
personalities, we can see similarities with singer and songwriter,
Rihanna. Similar to Beyonce, Rihanna is well known for her
outspokenness and empowerment for her fans worldwide. Both
artists have used their platforms to advocate for important social
issues and inspire others.
Another artist to compare to Beyonce recently is Taylor Swift and
her fandom, the Swifties. Taylor Swift's brand personality is more
wholesome and relatable, focusing on themes of love, heartbreak,
and personal growth.
Each celebrity has their own unique brand personality that appeals
to different audiences. Some may have a similar focus on
empowerment or confidence, while others may have different traits
that attract their fan base. Beyonce's brand personality is
confident, empowering, and talented. It is similar to Rihanna's
brand personality in terms of confidence and empowerment, but
Beyonce's image is more mainstream and less edgy. Compared to
Taylor Swift, Beyonce's brand is more focused on female
empowerment and success rather than love and personal growth.
2.
CS 7-3 What kind of opportunities does the existence of the
Beyhive community present to marketers? Consider not only
products that Beyoncé might offer, but also the many that
she could endorse. Develop a list of specific marketing and
promotional tactics they might use to reach this target
market.
The Beyhive creates numerous opportunities for marketers to take
advantage of to expand target markets of businesses. The Beyhive
has an iconic meaning associated behind it, that if there were cost
efficient alternatives to products, the fan base would deny them
because they are unlike what the Queen would purchase, utilize,
and promote (Collins, 2022., pg. 12). The existence of the Beyhive
community presents various opportunities for marketers. They can
leverage social media, create exclusive content, collaborate with
influencers, launch limited edition products, host fan events, utilize
fan-generated content, offer loyalty programs, and collaborate with
other brands to reach and engage with the Beyhive community.
Another option is to implement loyalty programs that reward
members of the Beyhive community with exclusive discounts, early
access to products, or special experiences.

1. Since lighter skin and skin whitening are popular in Thailand, is it wrong for marketers to offer and promote products that encourage this belief and behavior? Explain why or why not. 2. Find other examples of marketers creating controversy by promoting culture-based products that could be viewed as inappropriate by others outside of that culture. A Unilever brand in Thailand ran into some problems with one of its promotion campaigns, the "Citra 3D Brightening Girls Search." Citra Pearly White UV Body Lotion is marketed as a skin-whitening product. Skin whitening is popular in many Asian countries because lighter skin color is associated with higher economic status. However, this belief is not created by marketers. Anthropologists point out that Asian cultures, and Thailand in particular, have long histories of associating darker skin tones with outdoor peasants and field workers and lighter skin tones with higher socio-economic status. Citra s advertising was criticized because…
