Neil and Joan a brother and sister duo own a small dry cleaning business. NeJoWe Cleaners! provides several services to its customers: dry cleaning of clothes and household linen, laundry, ironing, repair work and clothing alterations. They currently have 5 locations across the capital city, with the sixth location being that of the main office where most of the cleaning and laundry is carried out.
NeJoWe has been in business for about ten years and believe that personal contact with customers, operational efficiency, fast and quality work has given them the edge in building the business. A key feature of their customer service is soliciting feedback from customers about their service quality, this they were able to do in person on their daily deliveries as one or the other travelled around to each location on a daily basis. These trips would also give them the opportunity to physically check on what was happening in each location and have formal and informal talks with the…

A toy company has developed two new toys for possible
inclusion in its product line for the upcoming Christmas season. Setting up the production facilities
to begin production would cost $50,000 for toy 1 and $80,000 for toy 2. Once these costs are
covered, the toys would generate a unit profit of $10 for toy 1 and $15 for toy 2. The company
has two factories that are capable of producing these toys. However, to avoid doubling the start-up
costs, just one factory would be used, where the choice would be based on maximizing profit. For
administrative reasons, the same factory would be used for both new toys if both are produced.
Toy 1 can be produced at the rate of 50 per hour in factory 1 and 40 per hour in factory 2. Toy
2 can be produced at the rate of 40 per hour in factory 1 and 25 per hour in factory 2. Factories
1 and 2, respectively, have 500 hours and 700 hours of production time available before Christmas
that could…

- Scenario 3 Ben Gibson, the purchasing manager at Coastal Products, was reviewing purchasing expenditures for packaging materials with Jeff Joyner. Ben was particularly disturbed about the amount spent on corrugated boxes purchased from Southeastern Corrugated. Ben said, I dont like the salesman from that company. He comes around here acting like he owns the place. He loves to tell us about his fancy car, house, and vacations. It seems to me he must be making too much money off of us! Jeff responded that he heard Southeastern Corrugated was going to ask for a price increase to cover the rising costs of raw material paper stock. Jeff further stated that Southeastern would probably ask for more than what was justified simply from rising paper stock costs. After the meeting, Ben decided he had heard enough. After all, he prided himself on being a results-oriented manager. There was no way he was going to allow that salesman to keep taking advantage of Coastal Products. Ben called Jeff and told him it was time to rebid the corrugated contract before Southeastern came in with a price increase request. Who did Jeff know that might be interested in the business? Jeff replied he had several companies in mind to include in the bidding process. These companies would surely come in at a lower price, partly because they used lower-grade boxes that would probably work well enough in Coastal Products process. Jeff also explained that these suppliers were not serious contenders for the business. Their purpose was to create competition with the bids. Ben told Jeff to make sure that Southeastern was well aware that these new suppliers were bidding on the contract. He also said to make sure the suppliers knew that price was going to be the determining factor in this quote, because he considered corrugated boxes to be a standard industry item. Is Ben Gibson acting legally? Is he acting ethically? Why or why not?arrow_forwardScenario 3 Ben Gibson, the purchasing manager at Coastal Products, was reviewing purchasing expenditures for packaging materials with Jeff Joyner. - At Hewlett-Packard (HP), billions of dollars of product are being shipped - from computers and diagnostic devices to toner cartridges each year. Customer orders come in 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Nearly 16,000 different products are requested daily and have to be shipped from six different warehouses which are located 30 or more miles apart. It often takes weeks to get the products into the customer’s hand. This is a serious problem if customers have contracts with HP stating deliveries are to be made in three (3) business days, or less. That means that from the time a customer calls the HP customer service line, they will have their replacement part and be back in operation within 72 hours or less, no matter where that customer is located. On average, delivery to customers takes 6+ days. It is imperative that HP guarantee for delivery of products and services are followed to protect their image, secure its position in the market place, increase its competitive advantage and its…arrow_forwardConsider Bruno who manages an underwriting team in an insurance firm.
