Question
Chapter 1, Problem 42EQ
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The formal charges on S, O and N atoms in the given structure is to be calculated.
Concept Introduction:
Some organic functional groups (even neutral functional groups) have formal charges on individual atoms.
To calculate the formal charge on an atom in any given structure it is necessary to distinguish between the electrons that make up an atom’s octet and the electrons that formally “belong” to an atom. In any given Lewis structure all electrons associated with an atom either as an unshared pair or shared pair are part of that atom’s octet.

Write the best Lewis or Kekulé structure (showing all lone pairs of electrons, formal charges, and appropriate geometry – use wedge-dash where needed) for each of the following species given as condensed formulas:
a) NH2-
b) PO3H3
c) H2COH+
d) NaBH3CN
e) C6H5MgBr
f) CH3AlCl2
Determine the number of lone pairs (if any) on each oxygen, nitrogen and charged carbon atoms in the following structures.
complete a Carvone Lewis structure that displays all valence electrons, all atoms and all the formal charges, if any. Use only a single dash for each pair of bonding electrons and a pair of dots for all nonbonding pairs of electrons.
Identify and label all functional groups (alcohols, amines, amides, carboxylic acids, ketones, aldehydes, aromatic rings, aromatic amines, etc) on the Lewis Structure. You do not have to circle alkanes. (Must be included in the preliminary submission and in the PowerPoint.)
