The polarity of
Concept Introduction:
Polarity results from the uneven partial charge distribution between various atoms in a compound. Atoms, such as nitrogen, oxygen, and halogens that are more electronegative have a tendency to have partial negative charges. Atoms, such as carbon and hydrogen, have a tendency to be more neutral or have partial positive charges.
Polar nature of the molecules can be measured by the dipole moment. If a molecule has zero dipole moment then it is a non polar molecule. If a molecule has a net dipole moment then it is a polar molecule.

- Given the bonds C N, C H, C Br, and S O, (a) which atom in each is the more electronegative? (b) which of these bonds is the most polar?arrow_forwardIn boron trifluoride the 3-D shape around the central atom is:arrow_forwardHow do you know when to draw a solid wedge vs a dashed wedge when drawing 3D bond-line structures? I know that solid-wedge means the atom is pointing towards you and dashed wedge means it's in the back, but how do you know which atoms are in the front as opposed to the back? How can you tell what the configuration will look like in space just by looking at the lewis structure or name?arrow_forward
- Ethylamine is an example of an important class of organiccompounds. The molecular formula of ethylamine isCH3CH2NH2. Draw its Lewis structure.arrow_forwardCarbon monoxide (CO) has a very small dipole moment (0.122) despite having a polar C-O bond. Using resonance structures, please explain this conclusion.arrow_forwardCompound: Carbon Trioxide give the: Molecular Polarity: generic formula: (ex. AX3E)arrow_forward
- What is the structural diagram of CH2ClF without lone pairs? Also what is its Electronegativity bond after you subtract the smaller from the greater value along with its bond type, total lone pairs of electrons and total bonding pairs of electrons? Lastly, is it polar or non polar (polar molecularity) ?arrow_forward3.
