Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The polarity of meta-dichlorobenzene has to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Polarity results from the uneven partial charge distribution between various atoms in a compound. Atoms, such as nitrogen, oxygen, and halogens that are more electronegative have a tendency to have partial negative charges. Atoms, such as carbon and hydrogen, have a tendency to be more neutral or have partial positive charges.
Polar nature of the molecules can be measured by the dipole moment. If a molecule has zero dipole moment then it is a non polar molecule. If a molecule has a net dipole moment then it is a polar molecule.
(b)
Interpretation:
The polarity of para-dichlorobenzene has to be given

- Indicate which molecules are polar and which are nonpolar. (a) SeO2 (b) N2O (N is the central atom) (c) SCl4arrow_forwardIn each of the following molecules, a central atom is surrounded by a total of three atoms or unshared electron pairs: SnCl2, BCl3, SO2. In which of these molecules would you expect the bond angle to be less than 120? Explain your reasoning.arrow_forwardA neutral molecule is identified as a tetrafluoride, XF4, where X is an unknown atom. If the molocule has a dipole moment of 0.63 D, can you give some possibilities for the identity of X?arrow_forward
- Consider the following molecules: SiH4, PH3, H2S. In each case, a central atom is surrounded by four electron pairs. In which of these molecules would you expect the bond angle to be less than 109.5? Explain your reasoning.arrow_forwardFormamide, HC(O)NH2, is prepared at high pressures from carbon monoxide and ammonia, and serves as an industrial solvent (the parentheses around the O indicate that it is bonded only to the carbon atom and that the carbon atom is also bonded to the H and the N atoms). Two resonance forms (one with formal charges) can be written for formamide. Write both resonance structures, and predict the bond angles about the carbon and nitrogen atoms for each resonance form. Are they the same? Describe how the experimental determination of the HNH bond angle could be used to indicate which resonance form is more important.arrow_forwardFollowing are the structures of three isomers of difluorobenzene, C6H4F2. Are any of them nonpolar?arrow_forward
- Which molecules are non-polar? CO2 SO2 SO3 NH3arrow_forwardThe molecule shown here is difluoromethane (CH2F2), which isused as a refrigerant called R-32. (a) Based on the structure, howmany electron domains surround the C atom in this molecule?(b) Would the molecule have a nonzero dipole moment? (c) Ifthe molecule is polar, which of the following describes the directionof the overall dipole moment vector in the molecule:(i) from the carbon atom toward a fluorine atom, (ii) from thecarbon atom to a point midway between the fluorine atoms,(iii) from the carbon atom to a point midway between the hydrogenatoms, or (iv) from the carbon atom toward a hydrogenatom?arrow_forward
